YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Ash sat on the roof of his old blue Volvo, leaning back on one forearm and staring up at the wide sky. It looked like it was made of glass that could crack open at any moment, spilling all the stars it was holding back from the world. There were no clouds, nor was there a moon, but the moon's absence didn't make the sky seem empty like Ash would have thought. Instead, the sky's lack of moon looked beautiful. He felt like he was looking up for the first time, seeing a wide sky, every single star its own separate focal point. There was nothing in the center to steal the attention away. And besides, the world seemed darker, quieter and calmer this way. It made Ash feel insignificant.
Raising his cigarette--perched between his fingers like a magnet--to his lips, Ash took a deep breath from it, a familiar sting of smoke in his throat resonating sharply. It'd taken a few drags, but Ash could feel the relaxing calm of the nicotine start to settle over his body. He blew the grey smoke up, trying to make a smoke ring and failing miserably. Ash couldn't remember how he'd gotten up to the roof on his car, only that it'd been ridiculously difficult. It'd taken quite a long time, though he wasn't sure exactly how long. He also wasn't sure how he was going to get down, but he didn't need to worry about that for now. He was waiting for Irina Rowland, a girl whom he'd been friends with since their first day in French class together. They'd never been incredibly close friends, but that didn't mean they couldn't smoke on the beach at midnight together. Taking another drag off his cigarette, Ash watched the blue smoke rising from the tip, his thoughts wandering aimlessly for a few seconds before settling back on Irina. They'd only talked occasionally this summer and only ever over text message, but it was a beautiful night and whoever had suggested this trip to the beach was a genius. It didn't matter that the beach technically closed at sundown; it wasn't like Ash and Irina were planning on wrecking anything. They just wanted to smoke a bit and stare at the stars and the cops would probably leave them alone, even on the off chance that they were to visit the beach on the exact same night as the two teenagers.
Irina was quiet, which wasn't normally the kind of trait that the people Ash hung out with possessed. However, there was something else about her that always had Ash smiling to himself, even if she hadn't said anything particularly amusing. He didn't know much about her. Her home life remained a mystery to him, as he'd never asked after it, feeling that if Irina wanted to share with him, she would do so without being interrogated. It was odd, again, that this wasn't the usual approach that Ash took to people. He rarely left peoples' personal business personal, instead asking all sorts of questions to which he expected honest answers. As a child, he'd been the kid to inquire of strangers why their hair was such a weird colour or why their kid had funny looking eyes. He'd never outgrown his curious nature, though he did know how to phrase things in a much more polite way now.
But with Irina, it was different. He felt no pressing need to understand everything about her, almost like he was saving her history and deeper personality to savour later. Which was odd, considering the two had never established that there would be a later, though so far there always had been.
"Talking looks like this!" Thinking looks like this! "Other characters talking looks like this!"

She would just make a fool of herself in front of him, which would be so embarrassing. Though, Irina always did seem to make a huge fool of herself, no matter what she seemed to do. Looking at him, she realized that he completely ignored her question. Oh well. She was completely use to being ignored by people. and Ash was no different to her. He just seemed to ignore her though. She watched him struggle a bit to move over, before he asked her to join him. "i' don't think that's a great idea.'' she said, her voice quiet. She was sure that she was going to fall off or something, and then she would get her blood all over her cloths. That just wasn't something that she wanted to do.
Irina looked at him and smiled a bit, though it wasn't a huge smile, just a very small one but still a smile none the less. "i'm okay, how about yourself?'' she said. She sighed a bit to herself before actually climbing up onto the hood of the car and then up to the roof, her footing slipping a bit and she looked like a complete moron. She looked at him and nodded, taking the cigarette from him, being careful not to burn herself from where the cancer stick was burning. She put her pale lips around it and took a drag from it, though she handed it to him rather quickly. She didn't want to waste his cigarette on herself. Irina would rather have a pack of dogs case after her then take a lot of something that really wasn't her style. She rarely ever took more then what she wanted, and even if she wanted a lot she barely took anything.
Ash was someone that Irina never really pictured herself being around. he was much louder, though he could still be quiet when he wanted to be. Irina knew that that he could be a cocky boy, though he never was when she was around. Why? God knows. he was also one of those few people who ever wanted to ever hang out with her. She never really hung out with people. Most people didn't really notice her other then when the teacher called her name for attendance.
she looked at him when he said something, though she wasn't actually listening. "What was that? I'm sorry. i wasn't really listening.." she trailed off, feeling bad that she hadn't been paying any attention to him. She started to go through be bag, trying to fill the awkward silence she felt like she had caused. Though it really wasn't even that awkward but still. She pulled out her lighter and a pack of cigarettes and then looked up at him. She sighed a bit before a small smile formed on her pale lips again.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Ash heard the sound of wheels turning on pavement. He didn't need to turn and look in order to know that it was Irina's blue Ford pulling into the parking lot. Within seconds, the car was two spaces over and he could hear the ignition get cut. Moments later, there were the footfalls of Irina and she was standing next to his car, looking up at him. "How did you manage to get yourself up there?" she asked and Ash smiled to himself. He looked down at her, first noticing how low cut her top was and then raising an eyebrow, the thin metal hoop embedded in it glinting faintly in the starlight. He completely ignored her question, finding that he was in no way willing to answer it, not did he actually have much of a description of how he had gotten up there anyway. It hadn't been particularly easy, but he supposed that it had been comical. But he was up there now, and that was all that counted. He shifted himself over on the car, away from Irina in order to make room for her instead of him hogging the entire roof all by himself. He patted the car roof next to him, making a guttural metal banging noise. "Join me," he said around the cigarette that was still in his mouth. Taking a long drag on it, he blew out the smoke through his nose as if he were an angry bull.
"How are you?" he asked, keeping his eyes on the stars and taking the cigarette from his mouth, vaguely gesturing in Irina's direction. "Want a drag?" It wasn't that he didn't have enough cigarettes to go around--and he doubted that Irina didn't have some of her own--but there was something intimate about just sharing a cigarette instead of each person smoking their own that seemed to fit the mood of this night. And besides, Ash would be lying if he said he didn't like the idea of Irina's lips touching where his had just been momentarily. The girl was adorable and to be honest--Ash nearly always was--she had quite a nice body. Not that he would tell her that. She seemed like the kind of girl who'd be spooked easily by that kind of a compliment. Irina was the total opposite of the girls Ash normally found attractive, the girls who would shove their tits in his face and give him crazy lap dances if he were just to ask for it; he liked the kinds of girls who didn't even go to his high school because he'd only ever seen them on TV and fallen head over heels in love.
However, Irina was quiet and sweet and Ash couldn't even picture her even knowing about sex, much less having it. And that fact alone was probably why Ash was so oblivious to the fact that he was indeed attracted to Irina. He knew he felt something, but what he felt was another question entirely.
Ash ran a gloved hand through his thick black hair, tilting his chin so that he could look up more at the night sky instead of across the beach to it. Seeing a whole sky of stars was different than just seeing a horizon composed of them, it felt much more breathtaking and brilliant. If Ash had though the sky had looked huge earlier, looking at it now, he realized it was truly enormous. "Could the sky look anymore fucking huge?" he asked, partially to himself, but mostly to Irina. Ash suddenly wished that the Northern lights reached to California, because he could bet they were absolutely gorgeous. Last year, the school had done a play with the Northern lights in it and Ash had thought that the fact that they even existed was just about the coolest thing ever.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Sensing Irina's apprehension to join Ash on the roof of his car, he almost told her that she didn't have to, that he'd join her on the ground. Just before the words left his mouth, however, he decided to hold them back. If he said it, that would mean that he'd actually have to do it and Ash was in no mood to be performing acrobatics just to get off the car. Instead, Ash put on his most amused crooked smile and gazed down at the girl who was standing by the car, looking up at him. "If I managed to get up here, you probably could as well," he told her, as if justifying why she should join him on the roof of his car. It wasn't even a very high car. In fact, it was rather low and Ash had no doubts that even Irina--who seemed like the kind of girl who might be a bit clumsy--would be able to manage getting on top of it with no problems, despite her fears. And besides, it was nice up here, if a bit windy. The view was worth the climb onto the roof, even if it wasn't much higher up than an average person's standing height would be. The weather was just chilly enough to be refreshing, but not too cold as to be intolerable and the wind didn't bother Ash much, aside from blowing his hair around, but he could live with that. His hair was messy anyway.
Ash glanced back down at Irina again, wondering when she'd come onto the roof with him, if she was even going to. She looked to be vaguely considering it, which was definitely a step in the right direction considering she hadn't appeared to have been interested in the slightest only moments ago. In fact, the girl was even smiling. It wasn't a huge smile by anyone's definition and if Ash hadn't known any better, he would have that that he was imagining it. But it was there, even if it was small. She has a cute little smile, Ash thought to himself. A rare smile, but definitely a cute one. "Alright," he said, shrugging absently and taking another quick drag off his cigarette. He was unusually alright, too. He'd gotten a decent night's sleep--though by no means was it a good night's sleep--and he'd left his painkillers in the center console in his car, removing all temptations to be popping them like they were Tic Tacs while enjoying Irina's company. For some strange reason, Ash was concerned about how Irina viewed him and it had occurred to him that dependency on pain medication wasn't a very flattering image to be portraying to a girl.
As he thought, Ash watched Irina clamber on top of the car. Though not graceful, it got the job done and the next thing that Ash knew was that Irina was sitting next to him, accepting the cigarette from him and taking a drag on it before passing it to Ash as if it were, well, on fire. Disappointed that Irina didn't seem very willing to share a cigarette with him, Ash took it back between his fingers and pressed it between his lips. He took another drag on it, holding it in his lungs for as long as possible before directing the smoke out of his mouth in one elegant, steady stream. The pearly smoke dissipated with the breeze and the vapour in the air, reminding Ash of a genie. He wondered if he could make a wish on the smoke, three wishes, in fact, though he didn't say anything. Maybe he could save his wishes for later.
Ash became aware that Irina had started talking again, and Ash suddenly remembered that he'd asked a question about the sky out loud, though he barely remembered what it had been. Thankfully, Irina had seemed to miss what he'd said as well, so instead Ash just mumbled "never mind," in an offhanded voice. He was pretty sure it'd been a stupid question, anyway.
Ash watched as Irina took out her own cigarette and lit it. He wondered why she hadn't wanted to share one with him, but he didn't say anything out loud. Ash wasn't sure if he was willing to deal with an awkward explanation that he probably didn't even want to hear. Instead, Ash pretended that he didn't notice and instead leaned back on his elbows, face titled towards the sky even more. He glanced over at Irina and noticed that she was smiling faintly again, which conjured a smile immediately to his own lips as if by magic. "You should smile more," he told her, almost without thinking. "You look cute when you smile."
