Not to say he minded company, but he liked some time away from it all. His brother was always by his side and he loved him dearly, but there were plenty of differences between the twins that made Amos want time to himself. For instance, where as Amos loved books, his brother found them a waste of time, space and effort. It was useless to force him to come along with Amos because he knew within fifteen minutes of walking into the store, they would leave to go somewhere else more 'fun'. Personally, Amos found Barnes & Nobles to be a rather fun place and he couldn't fathom how his brother thought otherwise, but he never questioned it because it would be inconsiderate to his brothers feelings. Still, when Amos had found out his brother was going to be elsewhere for the night, he had swept up the chance to go out on his own. His grandmother could cook on her own and his father was in China so there was no need for him in the house. And thus he had found himself wandering along the streets of Casper. It was around a mile and a half walk from his home to the general shopping area where most stores were situated in Casper; for most people a twenty minute walk at most. But for Amos, it took nearly double the time because he was in capable of getting to a place without getting lost. He had been driven there plenty of times, but whenever he went on foot it was like his sense of direction was totally misleading. When he would need to go right, Amos would walk to the left without thinking. It was a miracle he made it to the stores at all, with his luck he could have ended up in China before he figure out he was lost. Luckily, he had though and he went inside the large bookstore without even a second glance at the other stores surrounding it with their twinkling lights. Inside, he was surrounded by the shelves of books and he quickly made his way to the fiction side of the store, and from there the short stories. It was a genre he never got bored of, because in truth it wasn't a genre at all. A book of short stories captured multiple lives, stories, and points of view. There could be romance, comedy, and science fiction all in one book without having them clash because they were each an individual piece of the book. Taking his time searching through all of the books a lavender bound book caught his attention immediately. It was a novel by Kurt Vonnegut, well at least the stories were his own, the book however was published after the authors death, all of his short stories that would otherwise never have been seen had someone not collected them and put into a book. It was titled "While Mortals Sleep" and odd name that went with an even odder cover of a cartooned eye with a single tear drop. It intrigued Amos enough to sit down against the book shelf and start reading. He had pulled his knees up to his chest in hopes of not tripping anyone who might wander by, although it wasn't the most popular area of books to begin with so he was hoping he wouldn't need to move much while he read. Three pages in and he was already sure he was going to buy it. Short stories always got to the point quickly, he liked not needing to read so much about an unimportant back story and instead be able to get to the good stuff from the get go. Looking around once more to make sure he would not bother anyone he put his head down to delve back into the book, his whit hair falling in front of his eyes. |
