The mall was crowded. Than again, what mall didn't have a few hundred people running around? The five foot and six inches tall blonde walked casually around the mall. He stood in line at a pretzel shop and bought a regular salted pretzel. Pulling out four dollars he gave it to the cashier and walked away as he pocketed the change. Munching on the pretzel as it cooled down he tossed a penny into the water fountain and sat down on a nearby bench and finished the pretzel. The young man threw away his trash and watched as girls in short shorts and bleached hair walked by with their boyfriends, who had sagging pants and sunglasses on.
Trinten on the other hand wore a plain black t-shirt with blue jeans and a pain of black and white converse. He looked normal. He didn't exactly stand out. Which, he was fine with. Their were plenty of freaks in the mall, and he was glad he wasn't one. Sighing as he got up form the bench he had no idea where to go. He had just moved to the town and knew no one. He had made a few acquaintances at school, but no one he considered friends. Just a few jocks who leeched onto him, thinking he would join them in football. Yea, right. Trinten preferred swimming. Swim was in his blood. He did swim team in middle school and was fairly good at it. Getting to be on Varsity his Junior year. He had earned it, not being able to do a 500 Meter swim at all his freshman year in a good amount time had promoted Trinten to work harder to do the swim in a good amount of time.
He wondered into a few stores, looked around at what they had to offer, he stayed away from the perfume filed stores and hanged out at HotTopic for a while longer than he had liked as he debated on to buy a hoodie that had BatMan's symbol on it, but he didn't have $60 on him, so Trinten reluctantly put it back and walked out. Leaning against the brick wall and continued to people watch.WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS THINKING THINKING THINKING

She'd wanted a lollipop the size of her head from the candy store and at the first mention of a compromise, she'd had a meltdown in the middle of the store. No, she didn't want any other lollipop besides the enormous one, not even the hot pink one with Hello Kitty on the wrapper. Kieran knew that Mina was just tired. She'd missed her nap because Kieran had had to pick Quinn up from school when his sister had called home sick and then they'd had to come to the mall to pick up nausea medicine. Because Quinn had been throwing up all over the place and pretty much confined to within twenty yards of the bathroom at all times, there'd been no question of the sixteen year old watching her niece so Kieran had been forced to bring Mina along with him. Mina was just tired and wanted a nap, but she was getting incredibly worked up and Kieran doubted she'd calm down until she was settled in her bed with the lights dimmed. However, the crying was getting intolerable. Finally, right outside Hot Topic, Kieran stopped walking and picked up his daughter in his arms. He cast a wary look around to see who'd be witnessing, only seeing people who seemed to busy to pay much attention to him and one other boy about Kieran's own age leaning against a wall. However, Kieran didn't have much of a choice so he proceeded to speak to Mina in a low voice. It was funny how the little girl responded to babbling better than she responded to scolding, though it normally took quite a long time to get her to listen and much of the time it was easier to just hurry her home. "Mina," Kieran murmured, trying to get the flailing toddler's attention. He continued talking to her about anything he could think of, telling her about bubblegum pink elephants and singing flowers. Finally, after what seemed like hours, though it had only been about five minutes, Mina's wails subsided as she listened with rapt attention to what Kieran was saying. The girl had quite an imagination and loved hearing about things that barely made sense. "Better?" Kieran asked quietly, tugging the sleepy toddler closer to his chest. She rested her tear-stained cheek on his shoulder, nodding slowly. With a sigh of relief, Kieran sat down on the edge of a small fountain, incredibly aware of Mina's deep breaths. One of Kieran's father's favourite stories was about the way Quinn, when she was a baby, would try to breathe in time with him while he held her, eventually falling fast asleep. Mina did the same thing occasionally, but backwards. When Kieran would breathe out, Mina would breathe in and vice versa. That's what she was doing now, slowly falling asleep. Kieran hadn't exactly wanted her to fall asleep because that meant carrying her around the mall until he got to CVS, but anything was better than her wailing. |

He'd forgotten that he'd been being watched and for Kieran, it wasn't a pleasant feeling to be the center of attention. More heat rose to his cheeks when Trinten assumed that Mina was his little sister. It wasn't an unusual occurrence, but every time that it happened, Kieran had to explain and every time he explained, he could just feel people losing respect for him as a teenage parent. Kieran silently thanked his Japanese parents for having naturally dark enough skin that his blush wasn't so evident. "I'm Kieran," he said softly, as was his usual way of speech. Kieran shifted Mina on his shoulder, happy that the toddler was small for her age and wasn't particularly heavy. He could only imagine what it must be like for all the parents with fat, chubby little kids that wanted to be carried everywhere. He was sure that it wouldn't be too hard to gain sheer amounts of muscle that way and it must have been a great work out for the parents who were probably fat themselves. "This is Mina, also, by the way," Kieran said as his daughter made a tiny sound in the back of her throat in her sleep. "She's my daughter, actually." Kieran tried to stop another blush from appearing on his cheeks, and this time he succeeded rather well. Kieran was by no mans ashamed of his daughter--he loved Mina more than anything--but he hated the weird looks that he got from people when they realized that Mina's eyes were the bright green of her Irish mother's or that she wasn't nearly as Japanese as everyone expected her to be. Kieran did doubt, though, that the other boy would even notice let alone care. Teenagers had always been much more accepting about nearly everything. |
