It didn’t help, really, being away from Detroit. It just made it worse. Before, she just wondered what he was going to do next. Here, she had to answer that question, and two more. When was he going to find her, and how angry was he going to be? Would his actions be better or worse for having found her? Would he even find her? She hadn’t changed her name or anything, she’d just upped sticks and moved without any warning to most of the world. She had only told the important people, and he hadn’t been one of them. But who was he? His name: Andrew Layton. His age: 29. His occupation: Stalker. Or at least, it was as far as Artemis knew. He had another job, and it was during that that she managed to sneak away.
Artemis had been in Casper for roughly thirty four hours, but had hardly left her apartment. She had arrived, unpacked, bought groceries, and been out for a job interview. Only two of those had required her to leave her abode, and so she decided, once she had been home to change out of her suit, that she was going to explore the town that she was going to be living in for the foreseeable future. It looked picturesque from the road, and from her windows, and close up, it was better. There was litter on the streets, of course, but not much of it, and more often than not, someone would walk along, tutting at litterbugs and the state of the environment, and pick it up, either for recycling, or for the bin. Which, in nine cases out of ten, was less than ten feet away from the given item anyway.
The park, although she had no children to take, no dog to walk, and no real reason to go, seemed as good a place to start as any, as it was one of the furthest away points within the town’s boundaries from her apartment. This meant, of course, that she could meander aimlessly through the main streets of Casper and look at everything without getting distracted, because she had a destination to reach. That was the only way Artemis ever managed to stop herself from getting distracted by shoes, or gadgets, or even pets. She didn’t have one, and she’d probably start to feel lonely in that apartment, even though it wasn’t really that big. Then she’d have a reason to go to the well-maintained park every day, rain or shine (either weather phenomenon didn’t really affect Artemis’ decisions anyway). This animal thing was starting to sound like a better and better idea the more she thought about it.
Musing to herself about her favourite breeds of dog, Artemis only realised that she had reached the park when the ground changed from hard paving slabs to lush, soft grass. The sounds changed too, from cars and the clacking of business shoes striking the concrete to dogs barking, children laughing, and a constant pleasant current of chatter. She had no part in any of it, she knew, but she couldn’t help but smile at everyone that she saw. The flowers set into regimental beds interested her, with their bright colours and different shaped blooms, and she moved to look closer. Right into a tall, dark haired man that she had somehow completely missed seeing as she was looking at everything that was going on.
”I’m so sorry.” She had jumped, startled, but she quickly regained her composure, tucking a loose curl behind her ear and smiling up at the victim to her clumsiness. ”I should have been paying more attention to what I was doing.” In an attempt to lighten the mood (and perhaps make her first friend – or enemy – in Casper), she spoke for a third time. ”Want to exchange insurance information?” She accompanied the question with a wry smile, twisting the common chat up line into friendly banter that she wasn’t really sure she was entitled to use.
