silas clementine was born and raised in brentwood, ca. his father works (a ucla graduate) as a screen writer and his mother worked as a secretary at a law firm. typical upper-middle class family, right? well, yeah, actually. pretty much. or at least they were, until silas was eight.
silas's mom really loved her work, probably even more than mr. clementine loved his. or actually, she didn't. she loved one thing about her work, and that was max gold. he was in his late thirties, much like herself, and graduated from some uppity-east-coast law school. she really spent more time with him than she did her husband and they had an affair. eventually, mr. clementine found out and they went through a horrible divorce. the battle over silas was almost bloody and it pretty much scarred him for life, to see his parents arguing over him like that. his mother eventually got custody of him and they both moved into max gold's picturesque-downtown-los angeles-townhouse.
silas didn't take too well to change. actually, he didn't at all. he hated max and his mom and everyone and everything in the entire world. usually, his mother couldn't even get him out of bed to go to school in the morning. and if she tried, he'd scream and cry and say that he hated her and wished he were dead. max trying to persuade silas to call him "dad" wasn't really helping the situation, either. silas wanted his real family again and this whole thing went on for about three years. that was when he became completely unresponsive. he wouldn't pick up his cell phone, he wouldn't talk to anyone, he wouldn't really even leave his room. it wasn't like he hadn't gotten over the divorce already, because he had. it was something completely different and unexplainable. all silas knew was that he wanted to die.
silas's mom couldn't really handle him anymore. she was pregnant by then and she felt like silas was "giving the child bad vibes in the womb or something", and so she shipped him off to go live with his dad.
jack (silas's dad) lived in casper and had remarried by this time as well. his new wife was this surfer-hippie latina chick named maria and he'd completely changed. he'd started writing novels and even had a bestseller under his name. they greeted silas at their front door for more than just a weekend for the first time and immediately noticed that he'd gotten worse. he didn't even give his father a hug and they hadn't seen each other for three months, he just walked on in and went to his bedroom to unpack. silas hadn't been there for more than a week and a half before they took him to see a psychologist.
he was diagnosed with depression had to start taking zoloft as soon as possible. it wasn't long before silas started acting as a normal teenager would. he laughed and spoke and made friends with maria, who taught him how to play the acoustic guitar and surfing and took him to indie music shows on the weekends. silas was happy.
about a year ago, silas stopped taking his medication. things were a little bit off at first, but he managed to stay optimistic and in less than a month, it was like he'd never taken zoloft in the first place. he was loud and told jokes and flirted with the neighbor girls (silas had been homeschooled.) and went to the beach and played animal collective covers to make a couple of bucks and decided that he wanted to go to the high school for his junior year. his parents decided that would be alright, because, well. silas was normal.
